Public sector CV template: an example to customize
Public recruiters do not weigh the same signals as the private sector. They look for your grade, your professional stream if you are already in post, your grasp of regulatory procedure, and a readable progression of responsibility. Commercial vocabulary transposed as-is is almost always counter-productive.

What a public sector recruiter assesses first
- ✓The grade you are applying for and, if already in post, your current grade and stream
- ✓The route: open competition, fixed-term appointment, internal transfer or secondment
- ✓Public service experience: local authority, public body, government agency
- ✓Administrative craft: official drafting, public procurement, budget monitoring
- ✓Specialist software used in your part of the sector (finance, case management, e-procurement)
3 tips to make your public sector CV stand out
1. State your grade and stream
“Senior officer, policy and legal stream, grade 6” replaces a plain job title. For an internal transfer or secondment, this is the first thing an HR team looks for.
2. Translate results into public service terms
Avoid: “grew revenue by 15%”. Prefer: “average case processing time cut from 21 to 12 days across 340 cases a year”. Results still matter — but the unit of measure must be the administration's.
3. Cite the frameworks you actually apply
Procurement regulations, financial accounting standards, data protection law, employment statute: naming the texts you work under proves you understand the constraints of the role, not just its duties.
